Alastair & Tikker at The Weston Park Three Day Event

The British Eventing Under 18 Championships take place at Weston Park in Shropshire in early October each year.
The championships are run at CCI (International) one-star level.
After a successful season at BE Novice level Carelue Tikker and I were selected as part of the Central Area Squad – the only boy in a team of ten!
Three-day eventing is expensive, exhilarating and exhausting!
Just getting to know the routine of veterinary checks, trot ups and what to wear and when was puzzling enough.
The stables were like Pony Club Camp but ten times bigger.
Fortunately we had Celia Gough, the Central Area Co-ordinator, Mandy Lucey and Simon Lawrance, the squad coaches, to help us through.
Mandy’s husband Mark is an equine vet and it was great to have him there for the whole time too.
Tikker also found it all very exciting and spent the first day and a half trying to look at everything and everybody.
He didn’t even want to pull his head back into his stable to eat some hay in case he missed anything interesting!
The dressage was a ‘long format’ (20x60m arena) test with two judges.
Our warm-up went well but our actual test was a bit tense so our final score was not terrible, but not that great either.
The cross-country course was long and challenging. I walked it a total of four times beforehand, once with Simon Lawrance and some of the others in the squad to make sure that I knew all the twists and turns and exactly which lines to take. There were 30 jumping efforts of up to 1.10m in height, including two water complexes and several combinations over 4600m of hilly parkland. The actual ride went very well – Tikker was fit enough to keep galloping for the whole of the optimum time of 9 minutes so we went clear with only 4 time penalties. I lost my whip and also one of my stirrups temporarily in the main water complex so lots of leg was needed over the last couple of fences but Tikker was a real star and came home safe and sound. He also recovered quickly and so did not need any extra attention from the veterinary team who check all the horses’ heart rates at the end of the course.
At three day events the show jumping is on the final day so after the final official trot up, where the ground jury passed Tikker as completely sound,
we walked the course. The jumps were up to 1.15m and included a double and a treble. Tikker was quite tired after his marathon effort
the previous day so sadly we had two fences down.
Watching the final few riders was really exciting as the final rider managed to hold his nerve and had just one
fence down to hold onto first place. The Central Area was third overall – a good result for a squad that
had several riders who had not competed at this level before.
We made our way home very tired but really pleased at our performance, especially in the cross country.
We are working hard at our dressage this winter and looking forward to next season at Pony Club Open and BE Intermediate and one-star level.
Congratulations to Iona & Jasmine
Congratulations to Jasmine Cullum and Iona Gilchrist - both girls competed at Garth South ODE on Sunday 21st August 2011 . Both had lovely clear rounds - Jasmine came 4th and Iona came 8th.
Molly roars through at Longleat

Molly and Konan did their first BE event on Friday 17th June 2011, a BE 100 at Longleat.
They had the most amazing day coming 8th with a 31.5 dressage, one show jump down and clear cross country within the time.
Even the weather was kind to them, the only blip was her Dads driving as they needed to be towed by a tractor in and out of the car park!!
Well done Alasdair
Alasdair Matthews was placed 2nd at Hambledon BE in the ON18Q section.
It was a great day out, the dressage was challenging as the arena was on a slight slope but the show jumping
flowed much better and they just flew round the XC and his competitor number was 666!
Justin Brown and the KBIS award

Since gaining the KBIS award at the AGM in November 2010,
I have been working hard with my horse Eadagth (Edith).
We have been doing lots of flat work, having lessons with Debbie Carpenter and Marjory and Richard Ramsay.
We have attended BSJA Acadamy training with Paul Crago and Emma Young and qualified for Dengie show jumping
at Sparsholt.
Our first event of the season was at Ascott under Whychwood we competed in the intermediate class and after a still needing improvement dressage!! We did a double clear. The tetrathlon season hasn't really started yet and the first one we will compete in will be the New Forest in May.
Simulated x-country training with Richard Waygood was a great way to get the year going working on more
tricky lines and combinations that we may find x-country.
Storm and Timmy win at Ascot

Well done to Storm Ryan who won her race at Ascot on Monday 11th April 2011.
It was a beautiful day and was such fun.
Timmy was slow to start but once he found his racing hooves he was encouraged by Storm who
pushed him to the finish.
It was lovely atmostphere and we would encourage all South Berks members to join in the future.
It was a real honour to ride at Ascot and a memory we will have forever!
Storm won a voucher for a new Champion skull cap which was an added bonus.
A GOOD RESULT FOR CHARLOTTE AND DORRIS AT THE CTR WINTER SJ CHAMPIONSHIPS

Charlotte Rowe-Jones and Diamond Dorris had a great day out at the Chiltern and Thames Rider Winter Show
Jumping Championships at Patchetts Equestrian Centre on the 12th March where they were placed
4th in the Intermediate/90cm Class. Well done Charlotte and Dorris!
REBECCA JAMES QUALIFIES FOR SCOPE
Rebecca and Beauty qualified for SCOPE on 13th February 2011, coming 4th in a Junior Progressive (1metre).
She also won another Blue Chip qualifier (Discovery 90cm) on 2nd January.
A GOOD RESULT FOR BECKA JAMES AND CHARLIE PIKE JONES
Becka has been getting on with really well with Beauty (La Mia Bellezza)
- recently she has qualified for Trailblazer Show Jumping 2nd rounds with a 1st and a 2nd in the qualifying
classes. At Towerlands 4 day show she achieved a 1st, 6th and an 8th, sometimes out of 120 in a class.
On Sunday 7th November Becka and Beauty came 1st in the Blue Chip Novice Qualifier so
will be off to Blue Chip in April next year.
Charlie Pike Jones came 2nd with Bobby so will also be off to Blue Chip too.
So a good result all round for the South Berks members!!!
ABBY AND KAY HAVE SUCCESS AT SWALLOWFIELD SHOW PONY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Abby today gained 6th place at the Swallowfield Show Pony Championships on Kay (2’9” / 3’ ).
She put in a great double clear with the smallest
placed pony (Kay thinks he’s 14.2hh !!).
ROSIE AND MISTY PLACED IN UK RIDERS NATIONAL FINALS

Wow! Having been placed as one of the top two juniors in the regional finals
I qualified for the UK Riders National Show Jumping Finals which was held at UK Arenas in Lincolnshire!!
Imagine my horror when a few days before the finals we found Silver Dollar, aka Ollie
(the horse that I qualified on) had heat and swelling in his off hind leg. This was not what I wanted
to hear because that meant that I couldn't take him to the championships!
Misty, my brother’s young and green 6 year old loan pony who only started jumping
this summer had surprisingly done very well at the Area 13 Show Jumping and fortunately
UK Riders allowed me to swap the ride.
The journey up North took longer than expected because we had to drive through
torrential rain and it wasn't much better when we arrived as the stable block was flooded!
We had been feeding Misty some oats to give him more energy to jump and this certainly worked
and he jumped really well and was placed in both classes. Well worth the trip!
4th Novice 80cm National Final
6th Intermediate 90cm National Final
South Berks Members Qualify for Scope 2010
We turned up at the BSJA area 42 Wiltshire show in Melksham on Saturday to find that seven South Berks PC members were there, all battling it out at different competition levels and trying to qualify for the British National Championships " Scope", which is held in September.
A great day was had by all with some fantastic results. Starting with one of our youngest members Harriette Jones jumping in the unaffiliated ring the 1.6ft on her adorable pony Teddy. It was her first ever jumping competition and refusing to go on the lead rein or have any help so she could be like the big girls(and boys) she jumped a brilliant double clear and came 3rd.
In the affiliated ring Hannah Webber jumped The Stepping Stones class, this is for 128cm height ponies. Hannah was riding her amazing little pony Copper, she jumped a lovely double clear to take 3rd place.
Micheal Webber was jumping his pony Maggie May in the 138cm Smiths class which was a Scope qualifier. Micheal and Maggie jumped their way around two rounds bringing in the fastest time so won the class and qualified. Michael has also qualified for the Progressive 1 meter on Maggie which he did at a previous show. So he will have lots to keep him busy at Scope.
Emma Coyne had jumped her four double clears last year to qualify for the second rounds stage in British Novice to try and qualify for Scope. At this competition she had to jump three rounds and get placed within the top 10. So not an easy task but Emma and her pony Larry jumped three lovely clear rounds to come 9th and qualified.
In the 90cm open James Dunn, Rebecca James and Charlie Pyke Jones all jumped against each other in the piercing hot sun. They all jumped double clears with James on Barny Bee taking 3rd place, Rebecca on her pony Beauty 4th place and Charlie on her youngster Bobby Blue II 5th.place.
The final competition of the day just when you didn't think it could get any hotter( but it did) was the Newcomers/1 meter open which was also the Scope qualifier for the 1meter Progressive. With all the adults huddled together in which ever tiny bit of shade was available but the children and ponies had to compete in the searing hot sun. James Dunn and Charlie Pyke Jones both jumped brilliant double clear rounds over what was a technical and high course. To qualify for Scope in this competition they had to get placed in the top six. James came 4th and Charlie 6th so they both Qualified.
Well done to you all, South Berks truly has some talented show jumpers coming up through the ranks. The competition was tough, the sun hot and the ground hard but you all jumped amazingly and staying focused. Well done to Micheal Webber, James Dunn, Emma Coyne and Charlie Pyke Jones for qualifying for "Scope".
Rosie and Ollie win at Rogate

Rosie Courtier Dutton entered her first ODE of this year at Chiddingfold, Rogate.
She was really pleased that she did as she was placed 1st with a lovely clear round show jumping
and cross country, which lifted her from her 3rd place after the dressage. She is now looking forward to the next one day event!
Molly and Konan qualify for Riding Club National Championships

Molly McNickle and Konan went to the Riding Club
area qualifiers Intermediate Eventing at Snowball farm on the 22nd May 2010,
they had a 34.1 dressage and a double clear winning her class and are off to
Aston-Le-Walls on the 6th August for the National Championships.
This Weekend, they went to the BCRC dressage and had 65% in Novice 28 and 63% in Novice 30 winning both classes.
Good Luck Molly and Konan
A VERY ROYAL WINDSOR FOR SOUTH BERKS MEMBERS!

Congratulations to Piers Flawn Thomas who competed in a Southern England TET team at Windsor last week-end.
Their team came 4th and Piers rode a lovely clear round over coloured and rustic course which was quite demanding.
It was a great experience for Piers and Frodo, particularly the parade in the main arena in front of The Queen and
Prince Phillip late on Sunday afternoon.
.jpg)
Hugo Flawn Thomas was competing in The Service Challenge cup with a team from Pangbourne College.
His team unfortunately missed the jump off, but the other team from Pangbourne College which also had Ashley Pulleyn
(Ex SBPC) in the team came third, with Ashley also winning the best young rider under 25.
.jpg)
Frodo, Piers's horse was in great demand. Ridden by Hugo on the Saturday, used in the parade in the evening
and presented to the Queen (Part of the Pangbourne College Team), ridden by Piers on the Sunday,
then ridden by a rider from the Northern Ireland TET team, who didn't bring their horses with them.

Storm Ryan also met the queen!
Storm and Samber have been racing with the Shetland pony grand national.
Storm was unplaced at Badminton (and fell off after going through the finish line!) and had 2 second placings at Windsor -
they really faced to the line! Storm also met The Queen with the other children which was fun!
Rosie and Ollie jump to success again
Rosie Courtier Dutton and Ollie had a great day on Monday 3rd May 2010 at Hall Place they came 1st in the 3' Show Jumping Class and 4th in the 2'9" class. Well done!
Sophie and Ross come 4th at Hursley
Sophie Clarke and Ross were 4th in their arena
at the Hursley Level 4 ODE. They had a 32.8 dressage score, 4 faults show jumping and a lovely clear
round over a full up and technical cross country course with just a few time penalties for going too fast. Well done Sophie

HSBC Event Training Day
Georgie Frank was selected from South Berks Pony Club Members to attend a highly successful HSBC Eventing Training Day which was
held on April 13th, at Twelsedown Racecourse, with Yogi Breisner!
The Area 13 training day was one of the 22 days being held throughout the year,
as part of the HSBC Eventing Training Series within The Pony Club.
Top class instruction was available from Yogi Bresiner, World Class
Performance Manager and Chef d'Equipe to the British Eventing team, on cross country riding.
There was also a visit from The Pony Club's new President Lady Lloyd-Webber!

Well done to Rhys Miller and Amber
Rhys and Amber competed at the Royal Artillery Pony Club Hunter Trials
on Sunday 22nd April 2010 at Larkhill and won class 5, 3'0'.
OBHS Hunter Trials 11th April 2010
Success for the South Berks in pairs!
We had a great time at Rosehill, on Sunday 11th when competing in the Hunter trials there.
I was with Emma Durcan and her pony Wuzi and I was on my pony Dorris. We hadn't done pairs
together before, so were not sure what was going to happen. They went round perfectly,
apart from the odd race between some of the jumps! It was the novice pairs, which was 2`6-2`9
which was a good size for both of our ponies. Clare Turners training on novice courses helped me work out the speed
I had to go at. I knew how long it took me to go round the course, since I know Rosehill well. I worked out it was
a fast pace and I knew to keep the pace both of the horses would have to work very hard. The jumps were good sizes
and Dorris jumped them all really well and quickly and so did Wuzi. I think Wuzi enjoyed going round with a mare and
Dorris rather liked having Wuzi around her too !
I am so pleased that we got the fastest time and won because of how hard they worked throughout the course.
Charlotte Rowe-Jones
Storm Ryan competed at the Old Berkley Hunt South Hunter Trials at Rosehill and won the pairs with
another little girl from their club called Lori. The girls only met 5 mins before
the competition and they flew around chatting all the way! Sam was certainly taken with Candy, Lori's pony!
Lockhinge Point-to-Point
Congratulations....
To all our members who competed in the Pony Race at Lockhinge Point-to-Point on Easter Monday.
The South Berks made up half the field of six runners who took place in a mixed height dash over 7 furlongs.
In the 14.2hh division, Alice White and Jethro made the early running with Jethro
holding his own as fast as his little legs would carry him until the final hill for home.
An early streaker in the 13.2hh division was little Barney, partnered by 9 year old
JJ Sugden who was galloping his socks off until the final bend when he decided the
horsebox park was a better option than the finishing post in the oposite direction.
JJ persevered bravely and the pair headed off towards the finish until Barney spotted
another possible way home via a pedestrian course crossing and once again slammed on the
anchors to head the wrong way. This caused huge hilarity with the crowd, many of whom
had stayed to watch the last race on the card. But meanwhile........
Diminutive Shetland, Sam, ridden by Storm Ryan (who had run the race of his life but for whom lack of leg length against the others was something of a lost cause) screeched round the bend and beetled down the hill to roars of applause, pipping the wayward Barney at the post.
It was the most exciting, fun race ever and well done to all who took part! Special congratulations
to Anna Sugden for winning the Best Turned out... Barney looked fanastic!
Storm and Sam jump again.....
Storm and Sam entered the Hursley PC SJ competition on Easter Friday held at Sparsholt.
They were 5th in the 2ft (far too fast as the winner was set on a bogey time!) and 3th in the 2'3".
Successful placings at Hunter Trials for South Berks Members
South Berks members have braved the rain and competed successfully over the last few weeks
at several events in the area.
Southern Shires Bloodhounds Hunter Trials 28th March 2010
Elinor and Victoria Fleming won the 3' pairs class yesterday at the Southern Shires Bloodhounds Hunter trials at Compton.

Justin Brown and Eadgyth and Mollie McNickle and Dazzle were 2nd in the 2ft 6in pairs, this was Dazzles first competition and
Jax Dawes (Bugsy) and Rebecca Mayle (Todd) were 3rd in the 2ft 6in pairs
Wokingham Pony Club Hunter Trials 21st March 2010
Victoria Fleming was 2nd on Jubilee at the Wokingham Pony Club Hunter Trials 2'6 - 2'9 and Katie Mills and Charlotte Rowe Jones
were also placed 7th in the pairs class 2'6 - 2'9.
Emma Durcan went clear in the 2'6 which was excellent as this Emma & Wuzi's first xc together.

Rosie and Ollie are champions
Rosie Courtier Dutton and Ollie rode to victory (with some very tight turns!) in the 2ft 9" class at The Sparsholt Showjumping championships on Saturday 27th March 2010.

First Place for Alice and Billie
Congratulations .....
to Alice White for winning the 148cm Pony Race at the Oxford University Hunt Club Point-to-Point at Kingston Blount at the weekend.
Alice was riding her new pony, Billie Washington.

An encouraging start for Laura and Alex
Well done to two of the SBPC Mini's in their first outing at Hall Place this season in the 2' and under class (Class 1)
where they both jumped double clears - Alex Rimmer and Fudge came 3rd and Laura Misson and Lilbourne Caviar came 6th.
This is Laura's first time out in a show
jumping competition ever, so quite an achievement for both members!! Hope it bodes well for a good season 2010!!!

DENGIE QUALIFIERS
Rosie Courtier Dutton
Rosie did a Dengie Qualifier at Sparsholt. She did really well with a super jump off round in a very large class and came 5th, sadly missing qualifying by one place!
She will hopefully try and qualify at another show.

Michael Webber
Congratulations to Michael Webber and his new pony Maggie May who came 2nd in the Dengie Qualifier yesterday and will be off to the final on the 14th March.
We wish them good luck and look forward to the next installment!
FANTASTIC NEWS!
Congratulations to Michael Webber.
Michael won the dengie regional today! There were a very large number of entries and 24 in the jump off.
He was drawn early and did all the turns as well as galloped and was nearly 1 second faster than anyone else.
The Final is on the 27th March.
We wish him much success at the finals and look forward to lots of photos!
KBIS BURSARY AWARD
Firstly can I say a big thank you to KBIS for donating this award to the South Berks Pony Club.
When I was awarded this prize I was absolutely gob smacked and so was my mum.
My aim for 2010 with my 5yr old is to go eventing, so the £250.00 bursary will come in very handy towards my training to achieve this.
I will be getting flatwork lessons with either Fiona Harter or Karen Crago, some show jump lessons with Sharon Taylor and also some XC training in the spring next year.
Once again thank you so much for this amazing award.
I will keep you updated with my progress throughout 2010.
Regards
Annaliese Turnbull

We had 'SNOW' much fun!!!
As we couldn't ride our ponies in the snow we thought we have some fun.... we were being pulled along on some wood by the tractor
that Tony was driving, and as many people as possible
were jumping on and being pushed off, it was really hard though as the tractor was going really fast so most of the
time we were not very successful and would jump on then fall off the other side, all the snow would pile up at the
front though so most of us jumped onto the snow that had buried alot of other people.Even Linda, Jackie , Tony my mum
and all the others went on it ,
but were dragged off by Justin, Steven and Luke, all in all , we had some amazing snow days :)Molly McNickle
A television star
Katrina and Bo took part in the Oliver Townend Eventers Challenge qualifier at Sparsholt College and
had a super clear round in the 3ft - 3ft 3" class finishing third and have now qualified
for the finals at Aintree on 13th Dec which will be televised on the Country Channel.
****UPDATE********
We made the four and a half hour trip to the Oliver Townend Eventers Challenge Championships on 13th December in
Aintree where Katrina and Bo finished 3rd in the 3ft 3" class of over 30 riders, after completing a lovely clear round.
It was a lovely weekend, the arena was very big and colourful with lots going on and Bo
behaved himself beautifully. It was a great experience for them both.
This event will be shown on the The Country Channel (171 on sky) on Tuesday 23rd February at 7pm
Out with the hunt...
Rhia Honey, Charlie Pyke Jones, Georgia and Rory Hodge enjoyed some local hunting with The Vale of Aylesbury Garth and South Berks hunt on Saturday 28th November, the hunt met at Ufton Court.

Watch out X Factor....
Our members have many talents, Rhys Millar and his brother Tom with their band Fade to Black.....supported at their first gig by the South berks groupies....

Hannah and Laura enjoy a training session with Yogi Breisner
Yogi Breisner - World Class Performance Manager and chef d'equipe to the senior British eventing team –
is undoubtedly the right man for the job.
One of the country's most successful and respected trainers of both horses and riders,
Yogi was appointed British Eventing Team Leader in December 1999 and British Eventing's national coach in 2000.
Since then, under his guidance, Britain's Eventing team have won a staggering eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals.
So you could say the results speak for themselves.
Two of our members Hannah Turnball and Laura Burgess were lucky enough to take part in a training session with Yogi.
'The Yogi session was excellent,
he had the group doing an exercise where they jump a jump and then have to stop in a box a couple of strides after that jump, and
then go on and jump another jump a couple strides after that'.

Alex Webb and Bob
Alex and Bob on their way to winning the Individual 3ft 3in Interschools Show Jumping at Newbury Show, they were also placed 4th in 3ft class.

Look out for Katrina and Bo at Badminton 2010!
Katrina Harris and Bo have qualified for the BE90 Championship next May which is being held as part of the Badminton Horse Trials,
she came 6th in her Regional Final at the BCA.

Sophie and Ross come 6th
Sophie did the 3'1" against the clock Hunter Trials at Kingsclere on Sunday 4th October 2009 and came 6th in a class of 32.
It must have been the Richard Waygood effect!! Well done Sophie and Ross

Emma Durcan 6th at UK Riders National Final
After travelling the 160 miles to Grantham straight after junior camp Emma and Paddy enjoyed a good night’s rest before an early start the next morning!
They did a lovely clear round over the 2 phase 2’6 course.
The juniors and seniors were run together so it was a long wait for the results.
We were very proud and excited to hear they had been placed 6th.
Emma said ‘Paddy was such a star and even stood quietly ln the trailer while my Dad fixed the car on the hard shoulder coming home! It was such a lovely finish to the week after enjoying the best camp ever with all my friends’.
Storm does it again!
Well done Storm for being placed 6th at the Royal International Horse Show riding Samber
in the Mountain and Moorland
Working Hunter Pony Championships.
It was a very exciting day and the course was a full up 2' 6".
The crowd was huge (which we didn't expect!) and clapped Sam over every jump.
Congratulations to Charlie Pyke Jones and Kiplin
Congratulations to 11 year old Charlie Pyke Jones who won her class at the South Of England show at the weekend and qualified for "SCOPE" - The British Show Jumping Championships on her pony Kiplin. The championships are held in Staffordshire in
the first week of September.
Charlie had to jump two sets of double clears over very technical jumping courses standing at 1.05m in the first rounds. A real achievement in any normal circumstances but an amazing achievement for Charlie as in February of this year she underwent a major stomach operation and was told by her surgeon that she would probably be unable to compete this year.
Well done Charlie and good luck for September
DAZZLING DUO
12 year old Rebecca James from Lower Earley won the Combined Training competition and was highly placed in the first class at Hall Place Equestrian Centres popular event.
Rebecca has only been riding for 5 years but is already making a name for herself riding Hannah Bryant's lovely welsh section E Hardy's Dazzler. Hardy has had several riders in his very competent career, all members of the South Berks Pony Club and has been camp champion 7 times!
This talented combination competed at the Pony Club National Novice Dressage
competition 2008 and have now moved up to the South Berks Pony Club Intermediate Dressage squad.
Trainers Fiona Harter and Gillian Elliot are justifiably proud of their 'Protege'.
Rebecca's mum said 'Hardy is one in a million, both great at competitions and sensible.
He is high maintenance as he suffers terribly with sweet itch in the summer but its
all worth it because he has taught Rebecca loads and given her lots of confidence.
She loves him very much and his owner Hannah would never sell him as she adores him too'.
Storm and Samber Serendippity join the race to Olympia!!
Storm Ryan is now racing in the shetland pony grand national and hoping to try to qualify for Olympia on
him next year. This year she takes part in 'display' races and is off to Epsom and Gatcombe later in the summer.
Here is a photo of her at her debut race at Lambourn Trainers Open Day!.
Stonar Inter Schools One Day Event
Libby Bamforth finished on 64.5 in torrential rain and very slippery conditions.
They could hardly be seen doing their dressage, and Betty was not keen on walking in the
FWLR as the rain was stinging her bum!. 36.5 dr, 8 sj (slid into one fence and demolished
it as not able to jump over) and also slid into one X-C. No time pens. XC 90cms and SJ 95cms.
Will have been just out of the ribbons in her section although haven't seen the final result.

the BHS Cross Country Championship Finals (Open Class) on 27th September at Eland Lodge, Draycott-in-the-Clay. Well done and good luck Alasdair!
Well done Daniella Kilsby Steele
SBPC member Daniella Kilsby Steele had two seconds yesterday (5th April 2009) at the Kingsclere Hunter Trial in the 3'3'' and 3'6''
competition riding Flash and Zac - Caroline Flawn-Thomas's horses.
She actually got her money back with prize money!
Well done Rhia Honey
